Abstract: This article discusses findings of a study, which examined the role of CD1d-reactive invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells in the development of autoimmune disease in genetically lupus-prone mice. Diverse sets of T helper cells can promote autoantibody production in humans and animals with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). NKT cells produce interleukin-4 (IL-4) and it may be comprised of 2 subsets, like CD4+ T cells and double-negative (DN) T cells.
