| Abstract: |
The article reports on the rise of capitalism in Mecca, the site of the religion Islam's holiest relics. A report by the Saudi British Bank estimates that $30 billion will be invested in construction and infrastructure in Mecca through the year 2012. This growth occurs as Saudi Arabia's efforts to diversify its economy takes place as well as its joining of the World Trade Organization in 2005. The Wahhabi clerics' position on Saudi Arabia's economic development is discussed. |
