Abstract: A new proposal for a United Nations High Seas Treaty aims to create marine conservation areas in international waters, which make up two-thirds of global oceans. These areas are currently underprotected, despite being home to diverse and unique marine species. The treaty would fill a conservation gap and help mitigate the effects of climate change. Scientists are using data analysis to identify potential conservation areas, and advocates hope to begin designating these areas once the treaty goes into effect. While many countries have signed on to support the treaty, only five have ratified it so far. [Extracted from the article]
