Abstract: This article explores the work of Dr. Pilai Poonswad, a Thai ornithologist and conservation biologist, who has dedicated her life to protecting hornbills. She founded the Thailand Hornbill Project and has made significant contributions to hornbill conservation, particularly in highlighting the importance of nesting sites and implementing interventions to increase nesting success. However, as Dr. Poonswad transitions out of a leadership role due to age and physical issues, the future of the project is uncertain. The article discusses the importance of succession planning in nonprofit organizations, using the examples of the Hornbill Research Foundation and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund, and suggests strategies for ensuring long-term viability, such as cultivating new leaders and promoting conservation education and ecotourism.
