Abstract: This article presents information related to baseball. You would think a team that's playing well down the stretch would have an advantage heading into the playoffs. Surprisingly, there's no evidence that October glory tends to follow September success. Since the introduction of the wild card in 1995, 35 of the 63 postseason series have been won by the team with the poorer September-October record, 25 by teams with the better record. Three series involved teams with identical final-month records. Over that nine-year period, playoff series winners have played worse in September than the losers. Several recent examples of teams that entered the playoffs on fire but soon were smoking wrecks: The 2002 A's, 23-4 over the last month, were one and done; ditto the 1995 New York Yankees and the 2000 A's. At the other end of the spectrum, the 1998 San Diego Padres made it to the World Series after going 9-15 in September, and the 2000 Yankees won it all after limping into the playoffs with a 13-18 final month.
