Appl. No: 09/861781
Application Filed: May 21, 2001
Abstract: A method and apparatus for characterizing the type of a blood sample and a variety of blood components are provided wherein a transmission spectrum of the sample is collected over a predetermined wavelength range. For blood typing, this spectrum is then compared with a set of control spectra collected from control blood samples having known blood types, from which the type of the blood sample can be determined. Further methods and apparatus are provided for determining the viability of and for cross matching a platelet unit. Additional method and apparatus permit analysis of the sample for the presence of a contaminant. Particles can also be counted in the sample, even when present in low concentrations, including white blood cell.

Claim: 1. A method for determining the platelet viability of a test fluid sample containing platelets comprising the steps of: obtaining a test fluid sample containing platelets; collecting a multiwavelength transmission spectra of the test fluid sample over a predetermined wavelength range, wherein the wavelength range further comprises wavelengths in the ultra violet spectrum; obtaining a control fluid sample known to contain viable platelets; collecting a multiwavelength transmission spectra of the control fluid sample over a predetermined wavelength range, wherein the wavelength range further comprises wavelengths in the ultra violet spectrum; comparing the test fluid sample transmission spectra with the transmission spectra of the control fluid sample; and determining the platelet viability of the test fluid sample by comparing the quantitative spectral differences between the test fluid sample and the control fluid sample.
Claim: 2. The method recited in claim 1 , further comprising prior to the step of collecting a transmission spectra of the test fluid sample, the steps of: diluting the test fluid sample to a predetermined concentration of platelets in the sample; and diluting the control fluid sample to the predetermined concentration of platelets in the control sample.
Claim: 3. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the range comprises approximately 190 to 820 nm.
Claim: 4. The method recited in claim 1 , further comprising prior to the comparing step, the step of: normalizing the transmission spectra for the test fluid sample and the transmission spectra for the control fluid sample to an extinction coefficient at a predetermined normalized wavelength.
Claim: 5. The method recited in claim 4 , wherein the predetermined normalized wavelength comprises approximately 280 nm.
Claim: 6. The method recited in claim 1 , wherein the test fluid sample is contained in a translucent delivery bag and the control fluid sample is contained in a translucent delivery bag.
