Abstract: |
Disclosed herein is a method for graphically representing the condition of an anatomical structure that is the subject of a medical examination. The method includes displaying a background image representative of the anatomical structure, the image including a plurality of layers corresponding to different layers of the anatomical structure, selecting a layer of the background image, presenting a plurality of symbols, each corresponding to an anatomical pathological state and selected from a group associated with the selected layer, each symbol having a plurality of parameters which determine the rendering condition of a symbol on the background, selecting one of the presented symbols, selecting an X-Y position within the selected layer and displaying the symbol on the selected layer. |

Claim: |
1. A method for graphically representing the condition of an anatomical structure that is the subject of a medical examination, comprising: displaying a background image representative of the anatomical structure, the image including a plurality of layers corresponding to different layers of the anatomical structure; selecting a layer of the background image; presenting a plurality of symbols, each corresponding to an anatomical pathological state and selected from a group associated with the selected layer, each symbol having a plurality of parameters which determine the rendering condition of a symbol on the background; selecting one of the presented symbols; selecting an X-Y position within the selected layer; and displaying the symbol on the selected layer. |
Claim: |
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the background image further includes a plurality of zones corresponding to predefined areas of the background image. |
Claim: |
3. The method of claim 3, wherein the displayed symbol is positioned in one of the plurality of zones, the zone indicative of at least one of a clinically significant treatment and an anatomical location. |
Claim: |
4. The method of claim 3, wherein the displayed symbol is positioned in one of the plurality of zones, the zone adapted to allow additional modifications of the selected symbol. |
Claim: |
5. The method of claim 1, wherein the parameters include at least one of symmetry, positioning, density, persistence, scaling, movability, severity and opacity. |
Claim: |
6. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of layers include at least one internal layer and at least one external layer of the anatomical structure. |
Claim: |
7. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of layers represent anatomical layers, the order of which determines the drawing order of the anatomical structure. |
Claim: |
8. The method of claim 1, further comprising: associating at least one of a standardized billing code, procedure code, descriptor and dictation text with the displayed symbol. |
Claim: |
9. The method of claim 8, further comprising: recording in memory the location of each selected symbol; and generating an examination report containing information based on the location of each selected symbol. |
Claim: |
10. The method of claim 9, wherein the report includes at least one of the billing code and the descriptor in a format suitable for submission to a payment provider. |
Claim: |
11. The method of claim 1, wherein the displayed symbol modifies the background image, the modification representing one of a pathological state and normal state of the anatomical structure. |
Claim: |
12. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of layers are configured to allow a representation of a plurality of anatomical pathological states through selection and display of the plurality of symbols. |
Claim: |
13. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of layers is a text layer. |
Claim: |
14. The method of claim 1, wherein the anatomical pathological state is normal. |
Claim: |
15. The method of claim 1, further comprising: selecting a scale for the background image; and displaying the selected symbol proportionally to the background image's selected scale. |
Claim: |
16. The method of claim 1, wherein the anatomical structure is an eye. |
Claim: |
17. The method of claim 1, wherein the rendering condition is at least one of placement, shape, color, fill and pattern. |
Claim: |
18. The method of claim 1, wherein the displayed symbol is at at least one of the selected X-Y position and an alternative position based on the selected symbol's parameters. |
Claim: |
19. A method for graphically representing the condition of an anatomical structure that is the subject of a medical examination, comprising: displaying a background image representative of the anatomical structure, the image including at least one layer corresponding to an anatomical layer of the anatomical structure; selecting one of the at least one layer of the background image; presenting a plurality of symbols, each corresponding to an anatomical pathological state and selected from a group associated with the selected layer; and selecting one of the presented symbols, the selected symbol modifying the background image, the modification representing a pathological state of the anatomical structure. |
Claim: |
20. The method of claim 19, further comprising: displaying the selected symbol on the selected layer. |
Claim: |
21. The method of claim 19, wherein each symbol has a plurality of parameters which determine the rendering condition of a symbol on the background. |
