More Details: In this article, based on a shared field experience in Senegal in October 2022, we examine the methodological implications of the collective and international nature of geography research. The CIRCUS project is conducted in collaboration between the University of Angers in France and the University of Dakar in Senegal. The mixed nature of the team was conceived as a condition for overcoming certain limits of access to places that are a priori closed and to suspicious populations in a local context of ambiguous and asymmetrical social relations. In a tourist area of a southern country such as the city of Saly, the researcher can become confused by the complexity of relationships to space, the hybridization or compartmentalization of the practices of a population that has become cosmopolitan and pursues often divergent interests. The survey and observations by Franco-Senegalese pairs aimed at a better social and spatial coverage of the field. Finally, this search for efficiency in the collection of information led to questioning the researcher’s posture in the field and to redesigning the project’s initial problematic.
