More Details: Development of new antimicrobial agents is one of the main directions to combat the problem of antimicrobial resistance. The article is an overview of innovative antibiotics for systemic use that are under non-clinical and clinical development stages. When a number of those new agents are in fact representing the existing classes of antimicrobials (β-lactams, macrolides, tetracyclines, polypeptides), some drugs are of truly new classes with novel mechanisms of action (chaperone LolA, protein FtsZ inhibitors etc.).
