Abstract: The dependence of sampling fluctuations on the detector structure is investigated for multilayer total absorption detectors. Monte Carlo calculations and analysis of the experimental data prove sampling fluctuations to be dependent not only on the thickness of a detector cell but also on the relation between passive and active matter. We have obtained approximate formulae describing this dependence for electron-photon and hadron calorimeters.
