The article looks at the struggles of the black race and coloured people in Barbados during the era of African enslavdement based on the context of fraternal organisation English Freemasonry. It mentions that before the emancipation period, free Africans and coloured people were rejected to this activity since its rules and traditions were based on colour, race and gender. It also highlights the resistance received by these Masonic rules through the narrative of Loveless Overton, an African who attempted to negotiate spaces for the black race in English Freemasonry. The author also comments that Overton's challenge to change the socio-cultural practices governing Masonry reflects the complexities of freedom, race, and gender that can be identified in this cultural activity. |
