| Abstract: |
Bisphenol A (BPA), is widely used in the production of plastics, including food containers, electronic elements and mainly epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastics. It can penetrate to the environment and living organisms through the digestive tract, lungs and skin. BPA affects, among others, the nervous, immune, endocrine and cardiovascular systems. Unlike in human medicine, the role of BPA as a toxic and pathogenic agent in veterinary medicine has been marginalized until recently. On the other hand, it is known that companion animals, especially dogs and cats, which live in direct contact with humans in the same household, are exposed to similar environmental pollutants. BPA is present in animals food packages, toys, bowls and other items containing plastic. This review article describes the negative effects of BPA on living organisms and highlights what we know about the harmful effects of this endocrine disruptor on the health of dogs and cats.
