Los autores examinan las causas y consecuencias de cada crisis desde una perspectiva multidisciplinaria y a largo plazo. El libro se centra en crisis específicas como la de 1929, la del petróleo en los años 70 y la financiera de 2008, entre otras. Se destaca la importancia de estudiar un conjunto de crisis en lugar de solo las más conocidas. El texto también aborda la crisis de la deuda externa en América Latina en los años 80, las crisis durante la globalización en los años 90, la gran recesión financiera global de 2008-2013 y las consecuencias de la pandemia.
