Abstract: |
A proposed green energy project in northern Chile, including a hydrogen plant, port, and renewable energy sources, threatens the dark skies above the world's largest telescopes, such as the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The project, submitted by AES Corporation, could cost $10 billion and start construction in 2027, potentially impacting astronomical research in the region. Concerns have been raised about the project's proximity to the observatories and the potential loss of dark skies, with astronomers advocating for alternative locations to minimize harm to scientific research.
