| Abstract (English): |
The polar surface of a curve is defined as the envelope of the normal planes along the curve. It is part of the set of three developable surfaces generated by the movement of the Frenet frame, together with torsal and rectifying surfaces. The idea of a surface formed by the polar axes of a curve is the brainchild of Gaspard Monge who described its properties in Mémoire sur les développées, les rayons de courbure et les différents genres d'inflexions des courbes (1785). Polar surfaces, despite having been mentioned in several manuals of Descriptive Geometry, have yet to be described from the point of view of graphic thinking. This article reviews Monge's original text, bringing to light their little-known applications which present great interest for architectural design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

La Superficie polar de una línea curva se define como la envolvente de los planos normales que recorren la curva y se enmarca en el conjunto de las tres superficies desarrollables que se generan por el movimiento de los planos del triedro de Frenet, junto con las superficies tangenciales y las rectificantes. La idea de una superficie formada por los ejes polares de una curva lo debemos a Gaspard Monge que describió sus propiedades en Mémoire sur les développées, les rayons de courbure et les différents genres d'inflexions des courbes ... (1785). Estas superficies, aunque aparecen mencionadas en algunos manuales de Geometría Descriptiva, no han sido descritas desde el punto de vista del pensamiento gráfico. Este artículo hace una revisión del texto primigenio de Monge, sacando a relucir algunas aplicaciones poco conocidas de las mismas y de gran interés para el diseño arquitectónico.
