Abstract: Bonnie Oda Homsey, has created a remarkable film about an overlooked but extremely important modern dance pioneer named Michio Ito (1893- 1961). This article is an interview with the filmmaker about the making of the film. The documentary details Ito's prolific choreographic outpouring of over 120 dances, 23 theatrical productions and 6 feature films. At the height of his career he was filling stadiums like the Pasadena Bowl, the Rose Bowl and the Hollywood Bowl with thousands of audience members. Then suddenly, less than 24 hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ito was arrested, labeled an 'enemy alien,' sent to an internment camp, and eventually sent back to Japan as part of a prisoner exchange. He seems to have been erased from the dance history books and generations of dancers have come and gone without knowing his name. Homsey's 20 minute documentary is the perfect length to include in a classroom lecture. It is a must-have in the library collections of dance historians and university programs. Tim Cowart, Chair of the Dance Department at DeSales University interviews Homsey about her groundbreaking new film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
