Abstract (English): Clinical research in geriatric oncology is still in its very early stages. However, the heterogeneous nature of the aging process requires specific programs addressing both old and new therapies for elderly cancer patients. The “Programme d’action concertée d’oncogériatrie” (GERICO group), launched in 2002 by the French National Federation of Cancer Centres (FNCLCC), has acquired and demonstrated this specific experience. Other initiatives include those of cooperative groups such as the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) or the ARCAGY-GINECO group. New assessment criteria, focused on independence and quality of life, two key issues for the elderly, must be associated with the traditional axes of response and survival, whilst translational research is a key direction for future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
