| Abstract (English): | Introduction. The ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor, the disease evolves in an aggressive manner and with a high possibility of recurrence. Case report. A 17-year-old male patient, who as a radiographic finding a lesion was detected in the OD 38 with characteristics coincident with ameloblastoma vs. dentigerous cyst; the need for immediate treatment was informed and explained, the patient ignored it; 23 months later he returned to the clinic presenting an acute symptomatology in the third quadrant. Radiographically displacement of the OD 38 was observed with a diffuse radiolucent lesion in the body of the mandible that involved up to the area of OD 36. An incisional biopsy was taken, the result of the histopathological study showed ameloblastoma predominantly cystic, total enucleation of the lesion and follow-up was performed. Conclusions. Due to the complications of this type of lesions that can include bone destruction and loss of dental organs, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment is of utmost importance. | Abstract (Spanish): | Introducción. El ameloblastoma es un tumor odontogénico benigno epitelial, de evolución agresiva y con altas posibilidades de recidiva. Reporte de caso. Paciente masculino de 17 años de edad, que como hallazgo radiográfico se le detectó una lesión en el OD 38 con características coincidentes con ameloblastoma vs. quiste dentígero; se le informó y explicó la necesidad de tratamiento inmediato, el paciente hizo caso omiso; 23 meses después regresó a consulta con un cuadro agudo de sintomatología en el tercer cuadrante. Radiográficamente se observó desplazamiento del OD 38 con una lesión radiolúcida difusa en el cuerpo de la mandíbula que involucró hasta la zona del OD 36. Se tomó biopsia incisional, el resultado del estudio histopatológico arrojó ameloblastoma de predominio quístico, se efectuó la enucleación total de la lesión y seguimiento. Conclusiones. Debido a las complicaciones de este tipo de lesiones que pueden incluir destrucción ósea y pérdida de órganos dentarios, es de suma importancia el diagnóstico oportuno, así como el tratamiento pertinente.
