Relation: 6941 Pomelo Drive, West Hills, California 91307‐1216. Earlier versions of all three essays in this Focus section were presented at an interdisciplinary conference on mathematics and narrative that took place on the island of Mykonos in Greece in the summer of 2005. Inspired by the remarkable recent success of popular accounts of mathematics, this unusual meeting brought together mathematicians, writers, artists, historians, and philosophers. Their common goal was to explore all aspects of the connections between mathematics and narrative. Though not at all planned in this way, the three essays presented here stood out as a coherent unit thanks to their shared interest in exploring the use of the concept of narrative in writing the history of mathematics.
